Dolphin Sands Road will reopen to local traffic from 1:30pm today following days of closure due to devastating bushfires.
19 homes were destroyed and 14 others were damaged in the blaze, which continues to be monitored by firefighters from the Tasmania Fire Service and Parks and Wildlife Services.
Southern Regional Emergency Management Controller Commander Jason Elmer said the decision to reopen the road came after a comprehensive safety review and improved conditions in the area.
“Thanks to crews working tirelessly to clear debris and restore damaged infrastructure,” Commander Elmer said.

“With wind conditions easing, the situation has improved enough to allow safe access for local traffic.”
Police roadblocks will remain in place to ensure only residents can access the area, with reduced speed limits in effect.

Emergency services will provide protective equipment and information packs to returning residents.
Property owners unable to visit their properties can request updates by calling the Tasmanian Emergency Information Service at 1800 667 483.
Deputy Director of Public Health Dr Scott McKeown urged returning residents to be cautious of potential hazards.
“It’s important that people returning to their properties take steps to protect their health and safety,” McKeown said.

“People should wear protective clothing and try not to disturb dust and ash. There may be hazardous materials present in it including asbestos.”
Public Health advice includes wearing protective clothing such as P2 or N95 masks, avoiding disturbed ash, and being mindful of damaged septic tanks and contaminated water supplies.
Authorities have advised residents they do not need to arrange property cleanups themselves, with government assistance to be provided at no cost to property owners.
An evacuation centre remains open at Swansea Town Hall until the road reopens, while a recovery centre is operating at The Old Courthouse on Noyes Street between 8am and 4pm.

Commander Elmer expressed gratitude to emergency personnel and the community.
