The new Launceston hospice has taken another step forward with the release of concept designs by the state government.
The $20 million facility will be built on Howick Street at the Allambi Building and will provide a minimum of 10 beds.
It will cater for community members with life-limiting conditions and their families and carers.
Health Minister Jacquie Petrusma said the proposed facility is designed to replicate a home-like environment.
“Our government is committed to working closely with the community as the project develops and the design for the hospice has been informed by consultation with key stakeholders,” she said.
“The design promotes dignity, access and connectivity to the existing established garden and courtyard that are unique to the Allambi site.”
Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said the federal government was pleased to fund the entire project.
“The Albanese Government is delivering on its commitment to ensure access to high quality hospice and palliative care services in northern Tasmania,” he said.
“Giving people the greatest possible dignity and comfort at the end of life is so important, not only for the individual but for their families as well.”
Community information sessions and consultation will be held early next year, with construction expected to commence mid-2025.
The facility is anticipated to be completed and open to accept patients in late 2026.
