Fire permits have been suspended across southern Tasmania as the region prepares for high fire danger conditions in the coming days.
Deputy Chief Officer at the Tasmania Fire Service Matthew Lowe said forecast dry conditions, high temperatures and strong winds have prompted the ban.
“These decisions are made in the best interest of our community members and we appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation,” he said.
The suspension will begin at 6am on Sunday and remain in place until 8am on Tuesday.
During the 48-hour-period, no fire permits will be issued for burns and any permits already issued are cancelled.
Burns under 1 cubic metre that do not require a permit are also strongly discouraged.
Lowe said anyone who has lit a fire in the last week should check it is fully extinguished and reminded those operating equipment to be vigilant and avoid activity that may cause accidental ignition of vegetation.
“If you need emergency assistance or you see fire or smoke in the landscape, call Triple Zero (000) immediately,” he said.
