Plans for a new ferry terminal at Sandy Bay’s Lords Beach will be discussed by the Hobart City Council tonight, following the abandonment of a previous proposal for a stop at Wrest Point.
The new terminal is part of a broader plan to expand ferry services on the River Derwent, with new terminals also planned for Lindisfarne and Wilkinsons Point.
Opposition from Federal Group, the operators of Wrest Point Hotel Casino, led the council to identify an alternative location at Lords Beach to the south-east.
“A comprehensive maritime assessment of the Lords Beach location has identified the area as suitable for the development of the new passenger ferry terminal,” a report to go before council reads.
“A concept plan for the associated shore-based work is being prepared to identify the modifications required to enable connectivity between the existing road and footpath network and the new terminal.”
“Given the situation, it is proposed that Lords Beach be identified as the preferred location for the establishment of the new passenger ferry terminal subject to the consultation with the property owners in close proximity to the proposed development.”
More than 200,000 passengers have traveled between the Brooke Street Pier and Bellerive since the Derwent Ferry launched as a trial in 2021.
