Max and Jan Tonks remembered after fatal Bowen Bridge crash

An elderly couple who were killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the Bowen Bridge on Friday have been remembered as ‘beautiful people’.

Max and Jan Tonks passed away while travelling over the bridge north of Hobart on the first day of the school holidays.

Police said the couple in their 80s were passengers in a small Holden Barina, driven by a person who sustained minor injuries.

The Brighton Bowls and Community Club expressed their sadness over the “tragic and unexpected” loss of their members.

“We extend our sincere condolences to their family and friends at this sad time,” the club said.

The post prompted an outpouring of tributes, with many reflecting on the couple’s deep connection and dedication to their community.

“A horrific car accident yesterday saw two well loved character’s of the dogworld have their life taken away,” friend Alison Munton said.

“The world is a lesser place today.”

The crash involved four vehicles, including two other cars and a truck.

Both lanes of the bridge were closed for several hours as police investigated the incident.
