Police and the Tasmania Fire Services are also attending a multiple vehicle crash on the highway, which is causing delays.

No serious injuries have been reported in the crash.

“There is a large quantity of smoke drifting over the Bass Highway significantly affecting visibility of motorists,” police said.

“Emergency services urge motorists to approach the area with caution as the smoke appears suddenly and visibility is poor.”

A detour has been put in place at the junction of Bass Highway and Mengha Road and Irishtown Road.

Traffic is being diverted south via South Road and Faheys Lane.
