Smoke alert after registered burn jumps road, spreads to nearby trees in Sheffield

A burn-off that reportedly jumped a road and set alight adjacent trees has prompted a bushfire smoke alert for Sheffield.

Locals say the fire on Claude Road quickly spread across the road, igniting nearby trees on Friday night.

The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) has issued an ‘Avoid Smoke’ alert for the area, assuring locals that there is currently no threat to the general public.

“Smoke from this fire is visible in the Sheffield and surrounding areas area,” the TFS said.

“People who don’t need to be in the immediate area should stay away.”

According to TFS records, the private burn was registered to incinerate 250 cubic metres of material.

It was authorised to commence at 8:45pm on Friday and continue burning for three days until Monday at 8pm.
