Sorell’s deputy mayor has stepped down from council after moving outside the municipality.

Charles Wooley’s relocation made him ineligible to continue, ending his three years in the role.

He notified council of his decision on Thursday.

The Tasmanian Electoral Commission will now conduct a recount of candidates from the 2022 election to fill the vacancy.

Mayor Janet Gatehouse said Wooley’s departure was a loss for council.

“I am very sorry that Charles is stepping away as Sorell councillor and deputy mayor due to relocating out of the municipality,” she said.

“I will miss his considered worldly view on life, his contribution and support.”

“He cares about doing the ‘right’ thing for the community and has deep affection for this municipality.”

Despite resigning, the mayor suggested Wooley would stay connected with local issues.

“I have no doubt he will be keeping an eye on us and will not be surprised when the phone call comes,” she said.
