The Tasmania Fire Service has activated a Hot Day Response for southern Tasmania today as the region goes under a high fire danger rating.

TFS Deputy Chief Matt Lowe said no fires should be lit in the southern region under these conditions.

“A Hot Day Response doubles the initial brigade response to any fires that do occur and strike teams are pre-positioned at key locations in the region,” Lowe said.

Aerial firefighting crews have been placed on standby to support ground operations, with additional crews from Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service patrolling the east coast to monitor for new fire starts.

The northern region will also see dual brigade responses implemented as a precautionary measure, despite not being under the full Hot Day Response protocol.

Lowe urged community members to take personal responsibility for fire safety during these dangerous conditions.

“While TFS has these measures in place, we also ask community members to take responsibility for keeping themselves and their neighbours safe,” he said.

Residents are being warned to ensure any previously lit fires are fully extinguished to prevent them from reigniting under today’s conditions.

“This responsibility extends to ensuring that any fires that have been lit in recent days and weeks are fully extinguished to ensure they don’t flare up and escape.”

The TFS is encouraging all Tasmanians to review their Bushfire Plans, remain alert to their surroundings and stay updated with warnings throughout the day.

“If you do see a fire or smoke in the area today, report it straight away,” Lowe said.
