$120,000 in cash and semi-automatic rifle found in car of Kings Meadows man

A 33-year-old man is facing serious charges after police allegedly discovered a shortened semi-automatic rifle and more than $120,000 in cash during a vehicle search in Westbury yesterday.

The Kings Meadows man was intercepted by Central North uniform officers after initially attempting to evade police on Mary Street.

Officers located the vehicle parked behind a Westbury business, where they conducted a roadside drug test on the driver which returned a positive result.

During a subsequent search of his vehicle, police allegedly located and seized a shortened semi-automatic rifle, quantities of methylamphetamine, illegal stimulants and prescription drugs.

They claim to have also discovered more than $120,000 in cash, believed to be proceeds of crime.

The driver has been charged with multiple firearm and drug-related offences, including possession of a prohibited firearm to which a firearms licence may not be issued, possession of a shortened firearm, possession of a controlled drug and dealing with property suspected of being proceeds of crime.

Following his arrest, the man was detained overnight and will appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court today.
