Picture of Pulse Tasmania

A severe wind event is affecting areas of Tasmania tonight, keeping thousands of people awake to the noise of wind blowing a gale.

As of 2am, the BOM say a peak gust of 132km/h was recorded on the summit of Hobart’s kunanyi / Mt Wellington at 1:56am, while 98km/h gusts were recorded in the Hobart CBD shortly before 1am.

Power is currently out to several thousand homes – particularly around the Kingborough and Huon Valley regions.

Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover are now expected to be hit with ‘locally damaging gusts’ of up to 120km/h on Wednesday morning as a deepening low pressure system passes “just to the south” of the state.

The BOM say a strong cold front moving southeastwards across the state and a deepening low pressure system over the eastern Great Australian Bight is feeling the storm.
