A new $60 million multi-purpose sports precinct is set to be built in Devonport, featuring state-of-the-art facilities for seven different sporting codes.
The precinct will include a new four-court community-use facility, a two-court events centre, outdoor netball and basketball courts and indoor cricket and high-performance training facilities.
This project is a collaboration between the Tasmanian Government, Federal Government and Devonport City Council.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said the facility will benefit the entire north-west and west coast region.
“We have much to be proud of when it comes to our sporting prowess and those that have started their careers on the north-west coast and really expanded their horizons to elite sport right across sporting codes and across the country,” he said.
“[The] multi-use sporting facility … will enhance existing sports here when it comes to athletics, footy, cycling, but also bringing indoor facilities such as netball and basketball.”
Mayor Alison Jarman said the project is “more than just a sports facility”.
“It will strengthen our community, promote active living and serve as a platform for future sporting talent, while continuing to celebrate our longstanding sporting culture,” she said.
Award-winning Tasmanian construction company Fairbrother has been appointed to build the precinct, with CEO Kurt Arnold saying they look forward to create facilities that will bring lasting benefits to the community.
Construction is expected to be complete in 2026.
The project will be presented to the council for endorsement on Monday night.
