A new scholarship program has been launched to support Tasmanian women and girls aspiring to build a career in AFL umpiring.

The ‘Women in Umpiring Scholarships’, each worth $2,000, will be granted to three recipients across the state, with one selected from the south, one from the north and one from the north-west.

AFL Tasmania Women and Girls Lead Amy Bailey hopes the program will not only attract more women and girls to umpiring but also foster their long-term participation and commitment.

“This is a first for Tassie and a really exciting opportunity for women in umpiring to become leaders in the industry,” she said.

“Scholarship recipients will become champions and role models for young women looking at getting into umpiring, while gaining unique experiences and professional development opportunities throughout the year.”

The organisation says the annual awards align with the AFL Women’s Football Vision 2021-2030, which aims to promote greater female participation in football and strive for a minimum of 50% of senior coaching positions in the AFLW to be held by women.

AFL Tasmania Umpire Recruitment and Retention Lead Matt Phillips said more umpires were needed across community football competitions around the state.

“The scholarship program will open more opportunities for women and girls to experience all that footy can deliver, in a fostering and supportive environment,” he said.
