An independent MLC has sparked a social media pile on after sharing a photo of what appeared to be a wrongly installed road sign in Tasmania’s north-west.

Ruth Forrest took to Facebook to question the orientation of the sign on the Bass Highway near Tollymore Road, which she said was pointing in the wrong direction.

The sign currently faces towards Wynyard and Burnie when traffic is heading in the opposite direction towards Circular Head.

“I am seriously hoping this is a joke and not the work of State Growth,” she wrote.

Images from Google Maps show the sign was previously installed correctly

“Though I have my suspicions after we have seen a number of road signs with incorrect spelling of our places on the north-west coast.”

“It looks like it is not a permanent sign but if it has been put there by State Growth it is either the height of laziness or disrespect for our community.”

Images from Google Maps show the sign was previously installed correctly

But images captured by Google Maps suggest otherwise, showing the permanent sign in question had previously been installed correctly.

The sign simply appears to have been recently damaged and rotated around by either severe weather or a vehicle.

State Growth are understood to be aware of the issue and will work to repair the sign as soon as possible.
