Following the discovery of a blue-green algal bloom earlier this year, a popular swimming spot in Launceston has now been deemed safe to reopen.
Recreational water users will once again be able to enjoy Lake Trevallyn after receiving positive results from recent water quality testing.
The Tamar Estuary and Esk Rivers (TEER) Program have said that at current levels and based on national guidance, the bloom no longer poses a risk to recreational users.
“It can be difficult to predict how a bloom will behave but we have seen levels of blue-green algae reducing over the last few weeks,” Operations Manager Andrew Baldwin said.
“We’ll keep testing and sharing weekly updates with the responsible agencies and the community, so everyone can make informed choices.”
Additional monitoring will continue “until at least the end of April”, with weekly testing to be conducted at the Trevallyn boat ramp and Blackstone Park beach.
“The TEER Program samples taken over the past fortnight have shown a decrease in the concentration of blue-green algae across all testing sites,” Baldwin said.
