An orphaned Bennetts Wallaby joey has found a new home with a wildlife rehabilitator after a “rough start” to life.
‘Samuel’ was taken in by Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary after being found “all alone” under unknown circumstances.
“Samuel was orphaned under unknown circumstances on an unknown date. Luckily, someone found him all alone, but unfortunately opted to attempt to care for him themselves for some time,” the Sanctuary said.
“When Samuel eventually arrived at Bonorong he was not in good health.”
Their veterinary team have now developed a treatment plan with a registered wildlife rehabilitator to get the animal ready to return to the wild.
The sanctuary used Samuel’s story to remind people that raising orphaned wildlife is a “huge commitment” and should be left to trained professionals.
“It is common for well-intentioned people to find orphaned wildlife and attempt to raise them without adequate supplies, training, experience or support,” Bonorong said.
“Ultimately, the little creatures will suffer as a result.”
