Gymnasts in the greater Hobart region will soon have a brand new facility to train in, thanks to $2 million in state government funding.
The High Bar Gymnastics Academy in Bridgewater will receive the grant to upgrade its current facility, which has been operating for over a decade.
Minister for Sport and Events Kerry Vincent said the investment will support the club’s growing membership and provide opportunities for more young people to get active.
He says the club currently has over 500 members using the facility on a weekly basis and 750 active participants.
“That can grow and double if we get the right facilities to bring more people in to the active like this,” he said.
The academy’s Bibiana Devlin-Spiers said the funding will allow the club to boost participation across Greater Hobart.
“We’ll be able to see more athletes coming through the programs, growing into talented athletes and that is really exciting,” she said.
Athlete Emily Whelan said the new facility will provide opportunities for gymnasts of all ages and skill levels.
“I love the people here, the community. It’s just a great place to be. It’s like my second home,” she said.
“The new equipment, all the different, different space. Although we’ll miss here, it’s going to be great.”
