Delays have hit the construction of a new transit lane on Hobart’s Southern Outlet due to heavy rain, with authorities forced to reduce speed limits as a result.
State Growth says the wet weather has impacted line markings at the Hobart end of the outlet near the Davey Street intersection.
Contractors have responded by temporarily lowering the speed limit to 40km/h.
“If we can get a long enough period of time without rain [on Thursday], we will be repainting the line markings,” a spokesperson said.
“We will be working outside of peak traffic hours (after 9:30am), but we will need to temporarily close part of the left lane (Hobart-bound) near the intersection to repaint the markings.”
Work to build the extra lane between Davey Street and Macquarie Street started earlier this month and is expected to take around eight months to complete.
State Growth says the project will involve removing the existing traffic barrier and footpath on the right side of the road and replacing them with a new retaining wall.
The footpath on the left side will remain in its existing condition and the entire section of the Southern Outlet between Davey Street and Macquarie Streets will be resurfaced.
Some vegetation and trees next to the road will need to be removed to make room for the new lane and will be replanted once construction is complete.
