Tasmanians were treated to a stunning display of the Aurora Australis in the early hours of Monday.

Often referred to as the Southern Lights, the natural light show was visible right across the state from 2am to 6am on Monday morning.

From Woodbridge to Rolla, social media lit up with excitement as people shared photos of the ‘early morning surprise’, with both enthusiasts and amateur photographers capturing the vibrant green and pink hues.

“[I] could see a faint pink glow in the clouds and some beams, then the clouds lifted for a few minutes,” said Olivia Ford in Swansea.

The Southern Lights are the result of solar winds interacting with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere, creating vibrant colours that illuminate the night sky.

“Went outside for the usual morning coffee and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, so pulled the phone out, pointed it skyward and, surprise, a pre-dawn Aurora,” said Mick in Wynyard.
