Emergency chaos: Patient stuck 19 hours in ambulance at Royal Hobart

A patient was ramped in an ambulance for 19 hours while waiting for a bed at the Royal Hobart Hospital’s emergency department on Friday, a union has claimed.

According to Lucas Digney of the Health and Community Services Union, 92 patients were waiting in the emergency department at 2:30pm on Friday.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Digney said “the place is close to failure”.

“1 patient has been ramped with paramedics for 19 hours!!!”

The ambulance service handled around 434 cases yesterday, well above the average case load of 300.

The Department of Health and government are yet to comment on the situation, which has been described as a ‘complete mess’.
