Tasmanians of all ages have flooded through the gates of Government House in Hobart for its annual Open Day this weekend.
Built in 1857, the Queens Domain property houses vast gardens, its own vineyard and various paintings and pieces of furniture from across the world.
Families sat for picnics around the gardens overlooking the River Derwent, while a pop-up basketball activation from the JackJumpers kept kids busy.
Governor Barbara Baker believes it is important to open the property, which is not always accessible, to the public.
“It’s very important for me to get out and speak to as many people as possible and today gives me that opportunity to speak to people who I may not otherwise come across,” she said.
“So it’s very important for that. It’s important for the community to see their Government House.”
Her Excellency said Government House is home to a significant part of Tasmanian culture and heritage.
When asked what parts of the house she is most proud of, Baker said the gardens are at their best this time of year and the ballroom, with the world’s largest huon pine floor and three large chandeliers shipped from England, is also a standout.
“But I think the French drawing room, which is adjacent, is beautiful too,” she said.
“I’m very proud to be a Tasmanian and to be able to have this beautiful building in Tasmania.”
“We’re often told it’s one of the finest government houses in Australia.”
