If you were struggling to get on the internet in the last 15 hours, you weren’t alone.
Telstra have confirmed that an “unprecedented weather event” currently impacting Victoria affected one of their two Bass Strait cables yesterday evening.
“Our systems were able to move traffic to the state to an alternative route while we worked to get everything back to normal,” a spokesperson told Pulse.
“We worked urgently to bring everything back online as quickly as possible.”
The telco have apologised for any disruption, with the issue also causing havoc for a number of other providers.
According to consumer action group Digital Tasmania, the fibre optic connection went offline sometime before 9:22pm on Tuesday.
Now restored, but it’s been up and down through the night. Chart shows the effect of going on a longer backup path and evening congestion. Tested from SYD-LST. pic.twitter.com/canQFmG823

“One of three fibre optic cables connecting Tasmania is currently down. Likely due to widespread storms & power failures in Victoria,” the group said on Twitter/X.
“Means some Internet services may run slow. A further cable outage would result in major outages similar to what happened to Tassie in March 2022.”
