A former Tasmania Police sergeant has been charged with historical child sexual abuse offences following an investigation.
The 74-year-old man, who has not yet been named, is accused of abusing a young person in the 1980s while he was a serving police officer.
The charge of persistent sexual abuse of a young person relates to incidents that allegedly occurred over a long period of time.
Assistant Commissioner Rob Blackwood said the force recognises the “abhorrent and deeply disturbing nature” of the charges.
“As the case is before the courts, we cannot provide further comment,” he said.
The man was arrested in Queensland and has been granted bail to appear in the Burnie Magistrates Court on February 4.
Blackwood said Tasmania Police “strongly urge” anyone with information about child sexual abuse, “regardless of the passage of time”, to come forward.
