Liberal MP Nic Street has announced that he is temporarily stepping back from his ministerial responsibilities due to mental health reasons.

The Franklin MP who was first elected in 2016 said he has “had challenges” with his mental health “for a number of years”.

“During my time in politics, I have not shied away from talking about mental health issues openly and honestly to help break down the stigma attached to them,” Street said.

“I have chosen to use my situation as an opportunity to be upfront with Tasmanians and normalise this issue, just like any other health issue.”

Street says he has “increasingly struggled” in recent weeks and is currently working on his recovery with the appropriate supports.

During his absence, Deputy Premier Michael Ferguson will temporarily take over the role of Minister for Finance, with Minister Roger Jaensch to oversee Local Government affairs and Minister Nick Duigan to manage Sport and Events portfolios.

“I will be taking a period of leave to ensure I have the time and space to recover. It is my intention to return to my Ministerial duties in the coming weeks,” Street said.

In August 2023, Street handed the role of Leader of the House of Assembly to Elise Archer, saying at the time the “difficult decision” was the right one.

“For my own health and wellbeing it is the right time to step back from this important role,” he said.
