An Australian fur seal has stopped traffic on South Arm Road, leading to a lengthy jam of more than 10 vehicles.

The seal was spotted sitting in the middle of the road near the South Arm Nature Reserve and Recreation Area just after 4pm on Thursday afternoon.

Entertained drivers captured videos of the unusual traffic hazard, urging other drivers on social media to take care in the area.

The unexpected visitor caused “red” delays in the area, according to data from Google Maps.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania has previously asked people to keep their distance if a seal shows up.

“Coastal marine mammals such as seals are known to visit Tasmania’s large estuaries and river systems, often coinciding with seasonal movements. Seals may also come ashore but, in most cases, find their way back to the waterway,” a spokesperson said.

“Fur seals are wild animals and members of the public are reminded not to interfere with wildlife and keep their distance. Please keep your dogs on a lead and well away from the resting seal.”

A similar incident involving an Australian fur seal recently caused traffic delays on the East Derwent Highway.
