Tasmanians have been treated to a spectacular aurora australis display, with locals describing it as the ‘most vibrant’ they have ever seen.
The aurora was visible with the naked eye across the north, Midlands and south of the state on Thursday night.
Aurora chasers took to social media to share stunning images of the phenomenon before cloud cover impacted viewing in some areas.
According to the Australian Space Weather Forecasting Centre, a geomagnetic storm is currently in progress.
Auroras are expected to be visible in good observing conditions at high latitudes during night time hours.
“Two coronal mass ejections are expected to impact the Earth within the next 48 hours, possibly resulting in significant geomagnetic activity and visible auroras,” an alert reads.
