Aurora chasers took to social media to share stunning images of the phenomenon before cloud cover impacted viewing in some areas.

According to the Australian Space Weather Forecasting Centre, a geomagnetic storm is currently in progress.

Auroras are expected to be visible in good observing conditions at high latitudes during night time hours.

“Two coronal mass ejections are expected to impact the Earth within the next 48 hours, possibly resulting in significant geomagnetic activity and visible auroras,” an alert reads.
