A large-scale search has been launched for an overdue walker who failed to meet his group while trekking the South Coast Track in Tasmania’s far south.
The walker’s companions activated an EPIRB at 3pm on Saturday after the man had not been seen for several hours on the Iron Bound Range.
Tasmania Police say the man was overdue to meet his group near the Iron Bound Range High Camp.
A helicopter has tonight been sent to the area to search for the man.
The South Coast Track is a challenging 85km journey that takes most walkers six to eight days to complete.
“This walk is much more difficult than the popular Overland Track,” the Parks and Wildlife website warns.
“There are no huts once you leave Melaleuca. Strong winds, steady rain and snow in elevated areas can occur at any time of the year.”
“South Coast walkers need to be experienced and completely self-sufficient.”
Updated 8pm, Saturday January 4: The walker has been located by emergency services.
Police said he has been reunited with his walking party.
