The Tasmania Fire Service won’t be issuing any fire permits for the state’s south this week due to high fire danger warnings in the coming days.

From 12pm on Wednesday to 8pm on Friday, the TFS says no fire permits will be issued for burns and any permits already issued are cancelled.

They say conditions will be “unsafe for burning”, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting a severe heatwave across parts of Hobart and Launceston on Wednesday and Thursday.

“If you have burned in the last week, check your fire is fully extinguished,” the TFS urged.

“Burns under 1 cubic metre which do not require a permit are strongly discouraged. Anyone having a campfire and/or wood fire barbecue is urged to never leave it unattended.”

They also advise those operating equipment to remain vigilant and to “avoid any activity” that could lead to the accidental ignition of vegetation.

On Saturday, a blaze in Kingston was initiated by sparks from a grinder, which escaped the homeowner’s control.

“If you need emergency assistance, or you see fire or smoke in the landscape, call Triple Zero (000) immediately,” the TFS said.
