A young Tasmanian dancer has shared his excitement after performing alongside global pop icon Katy Perry during the AFL Grand Final pre-game performance.

Hobart’s Tom Young was one of Perry’s backup dancers, performing in front of a live audience of more than 100,000 and a TV crowd of over four million.

“I am so grateful to have been a part of this amazing experience,” Young wrote on Instagram.

The dancer left Tasmania to pursue his passion at Sydney’s prestigious Brent Street studio, where he has honed his skills and landed opportunities to work with big names

“I actually started dancing when I was six at Hobart Dance Academy in North Hobart, then I moved to a school called Janina’s Dance Workshop and that’s when I started taking it seriously,” he told Local Radio earlier this year.

“I decided to audition for Brent Street full-time and lucky enough I did get in.”

In the lead up to Saturday’s performance, singer Katy Perry last week declared she was a proud supporter of the incoming Tasmania Devils AFL team.

“I’m barracking for the new Tasmanian team that’s coming in next year … I’m calling it now,” she said.

During Saturday’s Grand Final, Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood had a surprise encounter with the superstar from a corporate suite at the MCG.

The Mayor took the opportunity to invite the singer to Launceston for the inaugural Tasmania Devils home game.

“Heard a little voice out the window! And wouldn’t you know it! After Katy Perry announced her love for Tassie, got her an official invite to come down for the first Devils game,” he wrote on social media.

“Even took my Mayoral card.”

In 2015, another Tasmanian dancer, Lockart Brownlie, danced alongside Katy Perry at America’s Superbowl.
