Hobart’s Mure’s Upper Deck restaurant has undergone a major transformation just in time for summer.
The $3 million renovation included a new main entrance with an enclosed staircase and lift, a full restaurant refurbishment and a new private dining space overlooking Victoria Dock.
Owner Will Mure said the investment marks 50 years of evolution for the family-run business.
“We’ve got three children in the business and they’re all still growing up, so we want to make sure that they’ve got something to come into,” he said.
“The vision for the Upper Deck was certainly to have a full overhaul, make it a more contemporary place.”
“We just knew we had to revitalise the whole Upper Deck.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff called in to celebrate the grand opening on Wednesday, alongside a number of other familiar Tasmanian faces.
Mure said the Upper Deck aims to provide a more refined dining experience than the more relaxed Lower Deck downstairs.
“Obviously this is more refined, but it’s not fine dining,” he said.
“We’re an a la carte restaurant that strives for excellence in service and excellence in food.”
“The clientele will be our locals that want to come out for a special occasion, birthdays or anniversaries.”
“Lots of tourists that love coming here … they’re in Hobart, they’re in Tasmania, they want to enjoy the waterfront.”
The renovation also included the creation of a new bar, Kelp Bar, which Mure says will provide a more accessible option for those who may be put off by the Upper Deck’s previous entrance.
“Anyone can pop up for a quick drink or just before they go to the cinema or whatever,” he said.
“There’s some lovely bar snacks our head chef has put up there. It’s a really lovely space.”
