I wish she was here to see this’: Hit 100.9 Hobart breakfast co-host Christie Hayes was moved to tears while discussing the upcoming Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese this morning.

Stopping to chat with breakfast duo Dan and Christie during his trip to Hobart, the Prime Minister spoke at length about the importance of the referendum, which he says aims to recognise the first Australians in the nation’s founding document.

Drawing likeness to past events like the same-sex marriage vote, PM Albanese expressed his personal hope that Australians would vote ‘yes’ in the upcoming referendum.

“I sincerely hope that Australians join hands in the spirit of reconciliation and we’ll be a stronger, more positive nation if we do that,” he said.

However, it was co-host Christie Hayes’ deeply personal connection to the issue that brought the emotional weight of the discussion to the forefront.

Revealing her Tasmanian Indigenous heritage, Christie revealed the reason behind her strong support for the ‘yes’ vote.

“My grandmother was a part of the stolen generation Prime Minister and she’s not here anymore,” Hayes confessed.

“I wish she was. I wish she could see this, Prime Minister.”

Albanese, clearly moved by Christie’s heartfelt sentiments, responded gently, “Your grandmother would be very proud of you”.

Australia will go to the polls on October 14 to participate in the referendum.
