Tasmanian basketball fans with sensory challenges can now enjoy a more inclusive experience at JackJumpers games thanks to a new partnership with St Lukes Health.

The not-for-profit health insurer and the NBL team have teamed up to provide free-to-borrow sensory packs at home games from December 5.

The packs include a weighted blanket, noise-cancelling headphones, a fidget spinner, sunglasses and earplugs.

“Being able to provide for a diverse audience is really important. It’s something we’ve been aware of since the beginning and something we’ve been developing over time,” JackJumpers CEO Christine Finnegan said.

“These sensory packs are really, really important for those with noise sensitivities or those that like a little bit of time out.”

St Lukes Events and Partnership Manager Nikki Long said the organisation worked with an occupational therapist to create 15 bundles.

“These items are curated,” she said. “They’re items that we know that can help people deregulate their senses.”

“A blanket can make people feel comfort. Sunglasses can help with all the sort of lights and sounds that are happening and, of course, the noise cancelling headphones can help with the loud noises to be able to feel comfortable in that space.”

“Those with sensory challenges shouldn’t have to miss out on the excitement and the community connection that comes from supporting their beloved JackJumpers and feeling part of the team.”

The initiative is part of St Lukes’ Diversity and Inclusion partnership with the JackJumpers and is the first step towards a more inclusive gameday experience.

St Lukes is also working with the team to develop a custom quiet space at MyState Bank Arena for those who might need some time out.

Parent of two young girls Sherry Heise says the pack will be helpful for her family.

“It’s great because it’s so loud at those games. We love going. It’s such a great atmosphere. But it can get quite loud, especially for my five-year-old,” Heise said.

“It just gives her more comfort and the noise level just quietens down, but I guess you can still hear it and you’re still part of the atmosphere.”

Packs will be available from the MyStateBank Arena info desk from Wednesday for both adults and children.

A St Lukes membership or medical diagnosis is not required, only ID.
