Musician Kelvin Smith has completed the gruelling task of pushing his 240kg piano from Hobart’s waterfront to the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington.

‘A Piano of Tasmania’ embarked on the challenge at noon on Saturday, with the goal of reaching the 1,271m peak in under 24 hours.

Completing much of the mountain under the cover of darkness, Smith and his support crew arrived at Big Bend as the sun rose, reaching the top at 9:21am.

He described the undertaking as a “living metaphor” representing 24 hours in the life of someone living with mental illness.

With over six months of intensive training under his belt, Smith prepared for the challenge with the guidance of nutritional and physical training specialists.

“Our fundraising target for SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY is $40,000,” Smith said.

“Mental health challenges can happen for any of us, so it is very important that we can support each other in breaking down stigma and encouraging conversations.”

On Sunday morning, Smith had raised over $13,000 towards his goal.
