The 16-year-old from Southern Tasmania will appear in an after-hours court after the incident on Murray Street at around 2:45pm on Friday.

Inspector John Toohey said police approached the girl as they “had reason” to do so after observing her in the city centre.

“It is alleged that when police attempted to speak with her, she assaulted three officers by kicking them and pulling their hair,” Toohey said.

“The girl was arrested and charged with three counts of assault police, resist police, unlawful possession of property, unlawfully possess a dangerous article in a public place (two cheese knives) and bail related offences.”

“Behaviour such as this won’t be tolerated by Tasmania Police.”

The officers involved sustained minor injuries but did not require medical treatment.

“We will continue to target anti-social and criminal behaviour and where appropriate, necessary and authorised by law, we will be charging those who offend and putting them before a Magistrate,” Toohey said.
