Launceston man facing multiple charges after police find loaded gun

A 26-year-old Newnham man has been remanded in custody after appearing in Launceston Magistrates Court on firearm charges.

Harley James Wilmot was arrested during a planned police operation at Kings Meadows on Tuesday.

He was charged with possessing a firearm in breach of a firearms prohibition notice and possessing a loaded firearm in a public place.

Wilmot, who did not enter a plea to the charges, is also facing unrelated charges in the Supreme Court.

As reported by The Examiner, Magistrate Jackie Hartnett agreed to the adjournment and ordered that Wilmot remain in custody until his next court appearance on October 17.

Police allege that Wilmot fled from a vehicle containing a loaded pistol before being arrested.

Tasmania Police thanked the public for their cooperation during the operation and confirmed that no one was injured.
