Five guns and “several hundred rounds of live ammunition” have been seized during an operation targeting the illegal poaching of sheep and deer in Tasmania’s Highlands.

The weapons were allegedly found over the weekend in traffic operations between Bothwell and Liawenee.

Senior Sergeant Mark Williams said rural officers from Oatlands, Liawenee and Kempton carried out the searches in response to recent reports of illegal poaching in the Central Highlands area.

“Police intercepted multiple vehicles and checked all relevant licences and firearms to ensure they complied with storage requirements while travelling,” he said.

“During the [operation], police intercepted a vehicle containing four men who were all in possession of loaded firearms.”

The group will now be proceeded against for multiple firearm and ammunition offences.

“This is a timely reminder that all firearm licence holders must strictly adhere to all firearms laws and adhere to best practice relating to the safe storage and transport of firearms and ammunition in vehicles,” Williams said.
