A man has tragically died and several children have been hospitalised following a drowning incident in the state’s north-west.
The man and children were swimming off Cooee Beach near Burnie on Sunday afternoon at around 4:30pm when they encountered trouble in the water.
Emergency services and Surf Life Saving lifeguards rushed to the scene after receiving reports the group were “experiencing difficulty” in strong currents.
Despite CPR efforts, the man was unable to be revived and passed away at the scene.
The children were taken to the North West Regional Hospital, where they remain under observation.
Investigators from Tasmania Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
“Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time,” police said.
The ages of the man and the children involved have not yet been released.
