Hobart could soon be getting what would be the city’s largest digital billboard, after plans for an almost three-storey tall sign were lodged with the city council.
Tasmanian not-for-profit health insurer St. Lukes has submitted the plans to the City of Hobart for the installation of a wrap-around digital billboard at the front of their new CBD wellness hub.
St. Lukes intends to use the large screen to display messages about their offerings and special community events, which they say are designed to help “every Tasmanian find ways to get healthier”.
The proposed billboard would replace the existing mesh signage currently wrapping the front corner of the building, which has been regularly updated since St. Lukes moved in in 2023.
According to the signage development application, the screen would be visible for approximately 165 metres along Liverpool Street.
“It is to be noted that the sign can be seen from the east leg of the Elizabeth Street and Liverpool Street intersection also, but this approach is restricted to pedestrian movement only,” the application reads.
The screen would not display more than one image within a 15-second period and would use an external light meter to automatically adjust brightness at different times of the day.
The application will go before a council planning meeting in the coming weeks after a period of public consultation.
