A brand new ‘state of the art’ ice skating rink could be built in Tasmania after the closure of the states’ only rink last year.
Sports Minister Nic Street revealed a recent feasibility study showed 60% of Tasmanians want to skate on ice, confirming that Tasmanians “have an appetite for ice sports”.
“We recognise the impact that the closure of the State’s only ice sports and recreational skating facility has had on the local community,” Minister Street said.
“Now that we have confirmation about likely future demand and participation trends in ice sports, I have tasked the Department of State Growth with delivering the last piece of the puzzle – a facilities options paper.”
The government will now look into the perfect location, design and price for the new facility that “best suits the Tasmanian market”.
“It will also look at a funding strategy to guide any potential investment that the Government would need to make, to ensure any new facility is set up for a successful future.”
“We know that Tasmanian skaters are eager to get back on the ice, and we will continue to work with the ice sports community to ensure any new facility meets their needs, and indeed those of all Tasmanians wanting to try the sports for the first time or to just have a skate around for fun.”
“We will continue delivering for Tasmanians by ensuring that they have access to great sporting facilities here at home.”
The facilities options paper is expected to be completed by the end of January.
