New artist impressions of the proposed Macquarie Point stadium in Hobart have been unveiled, showing the potential size of the building and its possible impact on the Cenotaph views.
According to the images released, the stadium’s roof would be 40 metres high, making it the city’s 18th tallest structure.
The drawings also show that the roof would be 33 metres lower than the Wrest Point Casino building and about two metres lower than the nearby Hotel Grand Chancellor.
The government commissioned the images to address concerns raised by the RSL about the proposed stadium’s impact on views from the Cenotaph.
However, the Department of State Growth reiterated that the drawings are not the final designs and that the official design process has not yet commenced.
The department also emphasised that when the design process begins, there would be full consultation with key stakeholders, and strategies would be put in place to mitigate any potential impact on views both to and from the Cenotaph associated with the specific location and final height and shape of the stadium in the Macquarie Point precinct.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff signed a deal with the AFL on Wednesday, securing a Tasmanian team’s place as the 19th competitor in the national league.
However, the deal is subject to the construction of the stadium by the start of the 2029 season, with an estimated cost of $715m.
The proposed stadium’s size is 240 metres long by 210 metres wide, not including the concourse around the stadium.
