The queuing system for booking Overland Track walks has been revamped ahead of the 2024/25 season opening, Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service has revealed.

Those hoping to secure a spot on the world-renowned six-day, 82-kilometre track through Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park will be able to join the waiting room one hour before sales open at 9am on July 2.

At 9am, people in the waiting room will be randomly selected to proceed to the booking site.

“We recommend that you join the waiting room prior to 9am, as those who access the link afterwards will be placed at the end of the queue,” a Parks and Wildlife spokesperson said.

“With only 34 places each day, popular dates can sell out very quickly and we recommend that you plan alternate dates in case your preferred date is unavailable.”

In 2023, over 3,000 hikers snapped up spots on the Overland Track in just six hours, causing major website traffic delays.

The high demand was attributed to the limited availability slots per day but despite the heavy load, Parks and Wildlife said the booking system remained active.

The Overland Track allows for a maximum of 8,296 walkers over the entire season.
