A newly installed ‘reverse vending machine’ that will give Tasmanians 10 cents per eligible can or bottle has been damaged in a suspected arson attack.
The front of the new Recycle Rewards machine at Claremont Plaza in Hobart’s northern suburbs went up in flames on Monday afternoon.
The deliberate blaze left visible burn marks and melted components on the car park structure.
Network operator TOMRA Cleanaway told Pulse the damage was “superficial” and would not delay the May 1 launch of the refund scheme.

The company noted that “security measures” are in place at all refund points across the state.
The incident comes amid the phased rollout of refund points across Tasmania.

Once complete, there will be 49 refund points statewide, including on King and Flinders islands.
Tasmania Police have confirmed to Pulse that officers have launched an investigation into the incident.
“Anyone with information in relation to the fire is asked to contact Glenorchy Police on 131 444 and quote ESCAD 230-10032025,” a spokesperson said.
