Wellington Park is facing an ongoing problem of illegal events, including a “bush doof” that drew partygoers to the foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington.

The unauthorised “overnight party”, which featured music and lasted throughout the night, prompted an investigation by the Wellington Park Trust.

In its annual report, the Trust revealed its Education and Regulations Coordinator (ERC) was alerted to the party at the Springs Hotel site in February.

They said the event was “informally” bought to the attention of the ERC by a local business operator on the day of.

Advertised and ticketed on social media, the event initially flew under the radar.

“Attendees were made aware of the range of restrictions applying in Wellington Park and when satisfied that there was no overt illegal activity, the ERC departed the site,” the report stated.

“An inspection was undertaken early the next day and no damage was found.”

However, further investigation confirmed the event violated Wellington Park regulations prohibiting commercial activities without a permit.

“Following leads on social media, the ERC was able to make contact with the nominated organiser of the event and delivered an informal caution,” the trust said.

“As these events are known to be a regular occurrence at locations including The Springs, ongoing monitoring is required to prevent further illegal activity in Wellington Park.”
