Locals are furious after a person allegedly removed a baby goose from its parents on Hobart’s eastern shore, but police say the individual did nothing wrong.
The gosling was reportedly taken from its ‘frantic’ goose parents in the Geilston Bay area on Saturday and immediately reported to Tasmania Police.
In a statement to Pulse, police confirmed officers had completed an investigation into reports of the “wildlife theft”.
“After speaking with both the reporting party and the individual accused of taking the geese, it was confirmed that a single gosling had been taken,” police said.
“As geese are not a protected species, no offences were found to have occurred.”
One local unimpressed by the lack of police action is determined to apply “public pressure” to get the gosling returned.
He has even gone as far as offering a cash reward for information on its whereabouts.
In Tasmania, only listed threatened species are protected from being killed, injured, caught or collected.
Geese, while beloved by many, are not on that list, leaving them vulnerable to such incidents.
