Over 350 drivers stopped during Tasman Peninsula road safety checks

A road safety operation on the Tasman Peninsula has found several drivers breaking the law, including one who was towing an unsecured 1.7-tonne excavator.

Tasmania Police and State Growth transport safety officers stopped over 350 drivers for random breath tests and vehicle inspections during the three-hour operation at Murdunna on Saturday.

Officer said it was “pleasing to see that most road users were obeying our road rules”.

Three drivers tested positive for illicit substances, two vehicles were unregistered and one driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

Twenty light vehicle defect notices were also issued, including two infringements for unsafe vehicles.

“Disappointingly, a driver was also fined for towing a 1.7 tonne excavator that was unsecured on his trailer,” police said.

“Remember, road safety operations will continue to be conducted throughout the state, so please do the right thing out on the roads to keep everyone safe.”
