Members of the Tasmanian salmon industry came together in Huonville on Sunday to celebrate the industry with a family fun day.
More than 700 people, including salmon workers, suppliers, community members and government representatives, gathered at the Huonville PCYC for the event.
The free family fun day included rides, food and entertainment for families with connections to the salmon industry.
Salmon Tasmania CEO Luke Martin said the industry is proud of its contribution to regional communities and its role as a major employer, creating jobs and economic activity across the state.
“You can’t go to the shops in Huonville without seeing salmon workers in their uniform and similarly you can’t go to a sports ground or clubroom without seeing signs of sponsorship from one of the salmon companies,” Martin said.
“Through direct employment, support for local businesses and infrastructure development, the industry has become an embedded part of economic stability in the regional areas where it operates.”
He said the industry’s impact extends beyond the more than 5,000 jobs it creates, also playing a role in fostering social cohesion, supporting education and enhancing food security.
“Today we are here to support and thank our people our providers and our community, who we are immensely proud of”, Martin said.
Despite pushback from the Greens, the industry has support from both sides of major state politics.
Salmon Tasmania presented “Salmon Champion” vests to Liberal Minister Eric Abetz and Labor MP Janie Finlay during the event in recognition of their support for the industry.
