A man has been stopped while driving drunk in St Helens at more than four times the legal limit, one of five to be caught since the start of the month.

Police say the 35-year-old’s BAC was so high he was likely significantly impaired, putting himself and other road users at extreme risk.

On October 1, a 46-year-old man was stopped in St Helens driving an unregistered vehicle with false number plates.

He was also driving without a licence and blew 0.079, one and a half times the legal limit.

He was charged driving offences and another related to drugs.

An 18-year-old woman was stopped in Scamander on October 6 with a blood alcohol content of 0.055.

Police said as a P-plate driver, she should not have had any alcohol in her system.

Two men were also caught driving under the influence in St Helens on October 9.

A 47-year-old was found to be driving on a suspended licence and tested positive for amphetamines, while a 35-year-old was stopped while driving over four times the legal limit with a BAC of 0.228.

Inspector Luke Manhood says police are actively targeting this type of offending.

“Alcohol and drug affected drivers put the safety of themselves and others in serious jeopardy and police will do everything we can to take them off the road,” he said.
