Dashcam footage captured on Hobart’s busy Tasman Highway has caught employees of the Hobart Hurricanes cricket team driving with a person riding in the tray of a team-branded ute.
The video, believed to have been recorded in October 2023, was shared on the Dashcam’s Tasmania Facebook page and has now prompted a police investigation.
The video shows a person in the tray of the ute attempting to transport a large box, which they were holding by hand, while travelling in a 110km/h zone at Cambridge.
In a statement, Cricket Tasmania said the incident had been ‘internally addressed’ with the employees involved.
“Cricket Tasmania is aware of an incident involving two of its employees and a Hobart Hurricanes-branded vehicle,” they said.
“The matter – which occurred late last year – was directly addressed with the employees concerned.”
The current employment status of the employees with the club remains unclear.
Tasmania Police are making a number of enquiries into the matter.
“Police urge everyone to be safe on the roads and to remember the dangers of travelling in a vehicle unrestrained,” they said.
Tasmanian road rules prohibit passengers from riding in areas of a vehicle not designed for carriage, with potential fines of up to $1,950.
