Police are searching for the person who was behind the wheel of a car that was found abandoned on the side of the road after it was reportedly seen driving erratically down the Midland Highway this evening.

The blue Ford Territory was reported to be “driving dangerously and at an excessive speed” in the southbound lanes of the highway in the Bagdad and Mangalore area shortly after 8pm on Thursday night.

Police say officers attempted to pull the vehicle over as they neared Bridgewater, however the driver instead sped off.

The car was abandoned a short time later and has now been impounded as investigations continue.

“Police are calling for any motorists who may have observed the vehicle or have dashcam footage of the vehicle on the Midland Highway between Bagdad and Bridgewater [around 8pm],” police said.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at crimestopperstas.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.”
