Within just one hour, police have fined 15 drivers for speeding in a targeted operation on the Tasman Highway at Mornington.

The operation, which ran between 8pm and 9pm on Tuesday, focused on excessive speed in roadwork zones, where the speed limit is reduced to 40km/h.

Two of the drivers were caught travelling more than 40km/h above the limit, with one clocked at 80km/h and the other at 89km/h.

These two drivers will be issued with a large fine and a disqualification period of up to four months, police said.

“It is incredibly disappointing that these drivers not only put their own lives at risk, but the lives of other road users and road workers,” Acting Inspector Penny Reardon said.

“Police will continue to target road work areas to reduce dangerous driving behaviour and keep road workers safe.”

The operation was carried out while resurfacing work is underway on the highway between the Cambridge Road underpass at Belbins Road and the Mornington overpass.

The work started on Sunday and will continue until Tuesday, during which there will be occasional lane closures from 6:30pm to 6:30am working hours.

Drivers should allow about 15 minutes extra travel time, as speed limits will remain lowered during the day until the works are finished.
